From the Cooper Union Home Test Prompt 5, “Buffer”
“In the Philippines there are many symbols and rituals that provide a buffer for harm. My family there is Protestant by the decision of the family matriarch--my great-grandmother--but I associate some of the buffering objects and rituals in my memory as originating in Catholicism. The first drawing depicts Santo Niño de Cebú, a Catholic image of Jesus as a small boy that is very common in Filipino homes, automobiles, and other establishments like doctor’s offices or restaurants. The small statue was a gift from Magellan, and became a symbol of protection and faith. The second drawing is of Mount Mayon, an active volcano within my family’s region of Bicol. The tower is the only visible part of the Cagsawa ruins, and it is the top of a centuries-old Franciscan church buried by lava. I was terrified when we visited the ruins, but remembered that our trip had been “blessed”—the car we traveled in had been blessed by a priest and given a new rosary to dangle from the rearview mirror, which I drew at the top of the landscape. The two digital drawings are layered on top of two abstract paintings I created.”
